Hatch End, a tale of two estates
Hatch End is a leafy suburb located in North West London forming part of the London Borough of Harrow. Hatch End grew from a small hamlet off Headstone Lane(by Letchford House which dates back to 1670), when the London to Birmingham Railway was constructed in 1837, the directors of the railway had lived along the railway line in The Avenue and it is believed that the trains would stop outside their houses to take them to work. The Hatch End Park Estate has changed very little since it was built by Combein & Wakelin Ltd, located to the north of the Uxbridge Road and includes: Milne Feild, Sherington Avenue, Furham Feild, The Lawns as well as parts of Rowlands Avenue and Oxhey Lane.
The Pinnerwood Park Estate, constructed by the Artesian and General Dwelling Company are known as ‘Artegan’ style and bare many similarities to the houses iound in Hampstead Garden Suburb. This estate was a much larger development which is locate to the north of the Uxbridge Road from Grimsdyke Road to Blythwood Road.
The Pinnerwood Park Estate became a conservation area in 1991 and as a result has retained much of its charm with its fine tree lined roads and character properties. There are a good selection of house types here, mainly consisting of three / four bedroom semi and detached houses, however there are a few two bedroom houses built around Pinnewood School in Latimer Gardens.
The properties consist of mainly of three / four bedroom semi detached and detached houses of either mock Tudor design or all brick (‘castle style’). This area has always been a very sought after location to live as its has remained relatively unchanged albeit for numerous home improvements and extensions.
