Harlesden or “Herewulf’s Tun”
It began as a Saxon settlement in a woodland clearing. There was a thriving brick and tile works from the 15th century, and by the 16th century it had grown to a village of seven houses surrounding a green that bordered the Harrow Road. One of these properties was the main farmhouse of the estate owned by All Souls College. Harlesden had soon developed its own identity and in the mid-18th century could boast two inns, ‘The Crown’ and ‘The Green Man’. At the time of enclosure in 1823, there were 30 desirable middle class properties.
Significant development was only really stimulated by the arrival of the railway, when a station opened temporarily at Acton Lane in 1841, to be replaced by one at Willesden Junction in 1866. The new station spurred on the construction of Chapel Terrace opposite ‘The Crown’. This work led to the construction of numerous villas, many of them by the United Land Company. There was no adequate sewerage until 1871 and inevitable problems with sanitation ensued. Harlesden’s High Street was rebuilt in the Edwardian period (1901-1910) and several cinemasand a music hall, the Willesden Hippodrome, also opened at this time.
