Manor Park, historically speaking

First used in the nineteenth century to describe a suburban settlement near Manor Park station, it now describes the whole of the Little Ilford district. The name ‘Manor Park’ derives from the Manor House built in the nineteenth century and once the home of a Lord of the Manor of West Ham.

In 1086, when the Domesday Book was compiled, the parish of Little Ilford was known simply as ‘Ilford’. It was not until the thirteenth century that the area came to be called ‘Little’ to distinguish it from the growing settlement of ‘Great’ Ilford on the eastern side of the Roding. It is ‘Great’ Ilford which we now call Ilford. ‘Ilford’ derives from ‘ford across the river Hile’, a previous name for the River Roding.

ROMAN PERIOD

Little is known of what the area was like in the time of the Roman occupation of Britain, but Roman remains have been found in the south of East Ham and the road which passes through Manor Park, which we now call the Romford Road, almost certainly follows the line of an old Roman road which stretched from London to Colchester. It is also likely that High Street North and South, East Ham, follows the line of a road leading to a Roman settlement.

SAXON AND NORMAN PERIOD

The Norman King William I’s Domesday Survey of 1086 describes East and West Ham and Little Ilford as they were before and after the conquest.

In the reign of the Saxon King, Edward the Confessor, the area we know today as East and West Ham was simply called Ham(me) (meaning low-lying pasture).

The manor or estate on the eastern side of Ham(me) was held by one Leured, a Saxon, and after the conquest by Robert Gernon, a Norman baron.

Little Ilford was held in pre-conquest times by two Saxon freemen and then bestowed by William on Goscelin the Lorimer.

The Domesday account reveals that in 1086 Little Ilford, with its centre of population half a mile from the main road, was a tiny settlement with a population of only ten. Its distance from the main thoroughfare kept Little Ilford’s population growth to a minimum between the eleventh and nineteenth centuries and also protected it from plague. White’s Essex Directory records that even in 1848 the population numbered only 189.
